- The LAXPD started with six officers and one sergeant in 1946. Their uniforms were slate grey. The traditional navy blue uniform didn’t become standard until 1980.
- LAXPD was responsible for athlete escort and protection and terminal patrols during the 1984 Olympics.
- LAXPD is a member agency of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
- The Dignitary Protection Unit was created in 1986 to plan, coordinate, and implement the security and movement of high profile political dignitaries passing through LAX.
- During LA’s civil unrest in 1992, LAXPD officers focused on airport security and patrol; however, some units were sent out to surrounding areas in order to gather intelligence on riot proximity. These LAXPD units were instrumental in thwarting several off-airport looting incidents.
- LAXPD redesigned and produced new LAX security access badges, completing 80,000 badge transactions in a two-week period after the events on 9/11.
- LAXPD is a permanent member of the Terrorism Early Warning Group as well as the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.
